Chance & Constraint

Chance & Constraint is a single creative day for young people aged 10 to 15, built on the idea that there's rarely just one way to solve a problem and that limits, rules and chance can spark ideas rather than block them.

Real materials, a practising artist and educator, and space to make without needing to know where you're headed. Quickfire challenges, working within rules (and without them), and a closing activity that's entirely their own.

The next Chance & Constraint day runs at Lady Bay Scout Hall on Tuesday 27th October.

What happens in Chance & Constraint?

One Creative Day

Tuesday 27 October, 12–5pm, Lady Bay Scout Hall.

A single five-hour day - no experience needed, just a willingness to try things.

Working with rules, and without them

The day moves through quickfire challenges, collaborative making, and working inside self-set limits — then, just as often, working with none at all. It's a day about discovering what becomes possible when the usual rules are loosened, or replaced with entirely new ones.

A book to take home

The day closes with a fold-down book, made and filled entirely on the participant's own terms — a record of the day, in whatever form they choose to make it.

Led by a practising artist and educator

Young Creator's Lab is led by Paul Liptrot, artist and creative educator. Paul has led on a variety of workshops and was the lead for the Midlands Maker Challenge at the Museum of Making in Derby, working with over 350 young people.

Paul loves working with young people to help them develop and brings genuine excitement about materials and process, and a belief that everyone has something worth making.
